1. Find you small, safe group: Choose a small group of people you feel relatively comfortable with (friends, family, a small club, etc.).

2. Pick your focus skills: From the strategies discussed on this post, choose one or two that you want to actively practice during this interaction. Here are some reminders:

  • Strategic Observation and Timing

  • The Power of Small Groups

  • Prepared Talking Points

  • Active Listening as Engagement

  • “Piggybacking” on Others’ Comments

3. Set a gentle intention: What small, achievable goal do you have for this interaction related to your chosen skills?

4. Engage mindfully: During your time with the group, consciously try to use the skills you've chosen.

5. Reflect afterwards: After the interaction, take a few moments to jot down your thoughts:

  • Which of the skills did you try?

  • How did it feel to practice these skills?

  • What did you notice about your participation?

  • What might you try differently next time?

Remember: This is a practice session. There's no right or wrong way to do it. The goal is to experiment and learn what helps you feel more comfortable and engaged.
